We backed two horses, Lord Windermere & Last Instalment, who were our first bets of the month.

First up was Lord Windermere who ran a fair race but probably was not quite battle hardened enough for a race of this nature. The horse travelled and jumped well throughout; on the turn for home Lord Windermere moved up into 3rd place on the outside and looked dangerous.

Unfortunately the horse did look to run well enough at the business end of the race. He did not handle the bend and appeared to hang too far to his left. Up the home straight we didn’t really quicken but stayed on nicely with the horse visibly shaking his head.

We think that a nice prize can be won with the horse, but talks of the Supreme at Cheltenham look very optimistic.

Next up was Last Instalment who was a lot shorter than we would normally bet, but the price did look to represent some value. The horse was clearly the best in the race by a long margin. The SP of 8-11 was about correct; we got 5-6 earlier in the day that represented better value.

Last Instalment won nicely, making all and wasn’t headed at any point in the race.

The stakes were given to ensure we made a profit if the first value horse lost. This worked as we had hoped with a 1pt profit made on the day. Admittedly it’s nothing to get excited about but at least we we’re off and running for February.

The cold snap looks to be nearly over and we’re hopeful that we can push on and prepare for Cheltenham. I don’t think we saw any Cheltenham winners at Leopardstown. Last Instalment would have an E/W chance in the RSA but with talks of Grand Crus running, a place would be best could hope for.

Quel Esprit finally won a fair race. He jumped round well despite a bit of pressure. Can’t have the horse for the Gold Cup, however he looks to have stones to find with Long Run & Kauto Star.

It was a good result for us yesterday; our antepost bet on Somersby came home first producing a nice profit. The horse has been called a few names in the past, bridesmaid etc, but the fact is he always runs in championship races. He never gets beaten by far and runs to his rating every time. Somersby is arguably one of the most consistent horses currently in training.

On the build-up to the race Somersby did seem the forgotten horse. The prices of 13-2 / 6-1 earlier in the week were far too big. Somersby had the best form in the race by a good margin and should have been priced up around 11-4 joint favourite.

During the race Somersby jumped and travelled really well (no change there). Approaching the turn for home it was a three horse race but Al Ferof was being shoved along and it soon came down to a two horse race between Somersby and, the main danger, Finian’s Rainbow. Jumping the last Somersby was just over a length down but a great jump put us right in the mix and under a great ride by Dominic Elsworth we hit the front to win going away at the finish.

Somersby was backed well before the race, returning 9-2. We’re very happy with the price we took earlier in the week.

It was great to see Terry Biddlecombe after the race who is recovering from a stroke. I think this was the first time Mr Biddlecombe has been racing since his stroke and it was bit of a fairy-tale story.

The horse will now go to Cheltenham, most likely running in the Ryan Air over two miles four where Somersby will no doubt run very well and either win or be placed.

We backed Iron Chancellor 4pts win at a general price of 5-4.

The race has only had three winners but more than often the market doesn’t look right when the second favourite holds a bit of value. More often than not the jolly will win but you don’t need to have a huge strike rate to produce a profit when betting in this type of race.

The horse Battle Group should never have been an odds-on chance in any race, even with a 20 lengths head start. The race was pretty much won jumping the first fence as Battle Group was reluctant to start and soon lost many lengths. The horse did get going eventually but ran on and off the bit for the entire race whilst hanging and proving difficult to steer for the jockey.

Lord Ranger could not win on current form and soon was beaten off. Iron Chancellor went a good 20/25 lengths clear on the second circuit and just had to jump round to win. He did just that under a nice ride from Hutchinson who kept the horse switched on as he jumped each fence.

We crossed the line around 15 lengths clear and towards the finish the horse was eased off significantly. The market did catch up during the day and our selection going off a very well backed 10-11 favourite.

Connections feel the horse could run in the four mile race at Cheltenham where we think he could have a shot.

September Review

We at BetterTipster are very excited to welcome in the new jumps season that is now properly starting. Members have already been sent our jumps notebook list for the 2011/2012 season. The document is packed with information pertaining to top quality unraced horses whose trainers feel will win plenty of races this season. By the time Cheltenham arrives in March, we’re hoping that some will be household names. At least four of the horses in the notebook are fully expected to win on their debut.

Anyway, it’s time to look at our September performance. The month started in great style with Jonny Delta landing us a decent gamble at Musselburgh. We knew that connections had had been targeting the horse at this valuable race for some time. Jonny Delta read the script perfectly, winning very nicely, landing both ourselves and connections a big gamble at 3/1.

We then placed a couple of small E/W bets with no joy, but Farang Kondiew soon came along. We had heard that this horse was held in high regard but had been off the track due to an injury. The results was another heavily backed winner for members; from 2/1 into even money.

In this tough transition period between Flat and Jumps, when the ground is inconsistent, this was the start of what turned out to be a really good month.

Take It To The Max was our next bet after Farang Kondiew. We backed Take It To The Max at 4/1, with the excellent Paul Hanagan in the saddle. Word reached us that this horse would be pounds better on the soft ground and that the drop in trip was a plus. This horse was fancied big time, so we backed accordingly; 4/1 into 11/4 with no problems at all.

All our action remained up North. A couple more bets at the big Ayr meeting; Kaldoun Kingdom disappointed in the Gold Cup but Nasri soon got us back to winning ways at Hamilton. After not making the cut for the big Ayr meeting, Nasri was considered a good thing in this small field. Nasri won without worry picking up some consolation money for connections and more pounds for us and members.

Our month nearly ended on a downer with a horse being pulled up early in a race after going wrong in-running, but we did finish on a high after backing Fountains Flypast off the boards at 3/1 advised and winning at 13/8; another big gamble landed.

The winning run continued in good style with 22pts bagged in the month. Just £10 on every selection since January 1st would have produced a tax-free profit of £1570.

We made a profit today with both bets placing. I still can’t believe Mon Parrain did not win. It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen a horse jump like him; today was a fantastic sight. Mon Parrain looked the winner for the entire race, never off the bit; lobbing along; jumped the last 6 lengths clear and even traded at 1.04 on Betfair.

The horse just needs a bit further as he couldn’t quicken up. It was really frustrating not to collect a nice bet, especially as we looked the winner for so long. I’ve received quite a few emails and know several members greened up and collected, but it was a huge shame that the weekend was not paid for with that bet. In the end our risk did return a small profit.

Somersby, well, what can you say? The horse jumped into the lead at 4 out, continued very well, hit the 3rd from last (as he did at Cheltenham) and got going again; running fast at the finish and just missing out on second. It would have been a tough job beating Master Minded but it again shows that the horse is crying out for three miles. Another profit on the bet with the E/W money.
