Cheltenham Festival 2011 Review

With the Cheltenham Festival now over we now have a spare few minutes to reflect on how we did at the best race meeting of the year….

BetterTipster has a fantastic record at the Cheltenham Festival, in fact its 100% since we started this service and we’ve never failed to make less than 20pts profit.

So, did we keep our record? Did clients clean up again? Well, the answer is a very clear YES. Following our staking plan members made upwards of 30pts profit.

This success was down to the likes of Sizing Europe, who we backed antepost at 10/1, Go All The Way, E/W at 33/1 in the bumper which paid 8/1 for the place. Big Bucks was also a strong bet. See below what members were told about Sizing Europe:

“I’ve no idea why they tried this horse over three miles, it was certainly a bizarre decision. Remember his solid victory in last year’s Arkle, on drying ground, where he jumped like a stag? When running left-handed Sizing Europe’s form reads 2113110511. We feel it’s suitable to ignore his last four runs as they have been on right-handed tracks. He’s now back to his optimum trip and for the first time since his Arkle victory a left handed track where he should show some sound quick jumping. As a result we feel that he is excellent E/W value at 10/1.

Sizing Europe jumped his rivals ragged and won very easily landing a super bet for members.

We also pointed members in the direction of Junior, Won 5/1, Bensalem, Won 5/1, Sir Des Champs, Won 7/1; all of which were at the big prices before being gambled on heavily each to win at much shorter odds.

Another Great Cheltenham for BetterTipster.. Bring on Cheltenham 2012!

Unfortunately we couldn’t go out with a bang on the last day of the Festival. Our only bet, Shoreacres, found things happening too quickly. We backed Shoreacres on Friday at 9/1 after a solid word from the trainer. With the rain that was due in the forecast it all looked good. Our bet was heavily backed on Friday and sent off at an SP of 6/1 after hitting fives during the day. Unfortunately the rain missed Cheltenham, as it often does, and along with a face that was run too quickly for our selection, a few errors put pain to any potential winner.

We’re delighted with our Cheltenham results. Though we haven’t finalized our numbers yet, we believe that the profit stands at around 30pts. Making any profit at the Festival is always great and this keeps our 100% profitable record at the meeting.

Our Cheltenham preview document also included ‘Just Info’ horses. Sir Des Champs was one of these and won yesterday at 9/2 after being backed in from 7/1 when mentioned. As for the other horses listed, yesterday Captain Knock got done in a very tight photo at 7/1. It’s also a big shame that Imperial Commander went lame during the Gold Cup after breaking a blood vessel. He was going really well on the outside and we believe that it would have been a great finish seeing all four come up the hill, but unfortunately fate had a different idea.

Thanks for all the kind words we have received by both email and phone. We hope you had a great Cheltenham and enjoyed been part of our service.

Gan On ran a shocker yesterday and was pulled up as a result. Rachel said after the race the horse ran into a brick wall four from home and had nothing left in the tank. This was a very strange performance as the horse had been working well and confidence was high. Runners from this yard always run their races and it is very rare for them to run shockers as Gan On did; the performance was baffling. Gan On will be checked over this morning. The stable were due to run As Der Fur today but have pulled the selection out on the back of the Gan On performance. I will speak with the yard today and report back later on.

I mentioned earlier in the week that we placing a Max E/W bet for the Cheltenham Festival. The race the horse runs in is not a ‘non-runner no bet race’, but we have been speaking with a small online bookmaker who agreed for us to pass on names of all clients and give us none runner no bet and the same price.

This was all agreed and the horse in questions runs at the weekend. Unfortunately I’ve had an email this morning and it seems they’ve backed out of the plan. I will be ringing them shortly. We are still extremely keen on placing this bet but there is zero chance we will be placing a max in a market that is not non-runner no bet.

We had two more ante-post selections run yesterday for BetterTipster clients. We started by cheering on Poquelin in the Ryanair Chase. We backed this horse at 4/1 a couple of weeks ago. Today the horse was gambled on heavily and returned an SP of 11/4. The horse ran a great race and finished second, it really did look like we would be collecting again. A mistake at the last sealed our fate and unfortunately Poquelin finished second. Once again another of our ante-post selections ran a cracker.

Our 2nd bet was not original by any means. However, I had strong faith and hence made Big Bucks the banker bet of the meeting. We have been following this horse closely in recent weeks. We never had any doubt about this horse, it my cert of the festival. Big Bucks delivered with an amazing performance. It only took a shake of the reigns and the horse won with any amount in hand.

This added to our previous profits made on Days 1 and 2 of the festival.

We were still not quite finished. We had late news of a horse that was expected to go close at a huge price. This was not an account bet, but was passed on to members as just Info. The horse was Faasel running in the Kim Muir with 28 runners. We were informed the horse had been working very well at home. It was the first run for the David Pipe stable after a long layoff. At the time of emailing the horse was 28/1. Faasel ran a fantastic race and just got tipped for the win by a nose. A stride after the line and we were in front. Regardless it is good to get so close to a huge winner.

So what does today have in store? Well, we have our final two ante-post bets running. No matter what the result we will have finished with huge profits once again. The Cheltenham festival is a strong point for us and despite its difficulty we do make large profits. How many other Tipping Services can deliver this?

Finally, it's here……..

The best week of the year has arrived. Welcome all, to the Cheltenham festival.

We’re all puzzling over various several big questions. Are you one of those that have a big ante-post bets burning in your back pocket? Are you going to the festival? Possibly sinking a few beers with the Irish? Will Dunguib win by a mile in the first? What state will the roof be in if it does? Will Kauto win the Gold cup?

The answers will come over the most thrilling four days racing the world has to offer. It does not get any bigger than this.

The majority of our ante-post bets have been placed over the last two weeks. Already we hold some tasty prices that have since been dramatically cut. Do we green up, or do we let it run?

Personally, I choose to let them run.

We will do our very best to update the blog most evenings during the festival, so you can see how we get on. The last couple of weeks have been a bit dull. We’ve had a few bets, both Win and E/W prices, but the horses have just come up short either finishing 2nd, bringing back the stake money, or not quite being asked enough at the finish.

In my opinion, here are a few horse to keep an eye out for:

Ashkazar has been plotted up for the Martin Pipe Hurdle. The horse’s last race was a learning curve for the jockey. Remember this horse was at one time the favourite for the champion hurdle. Ashkazar has slipped to a very good mark and has been backed over the last week by people in the know. This is reflected in the price moving from 33/1 into 7/1.

Long Run goes for the RSA. Make no mistake this is the best horse to come out of France since Kauto Star. If this horse adapts to English fences and jumps cleanly, it will take massive amounts of beating. In time, Long Run will win the Gold Cup.

If you are going to the festival then we here at BetterTipster HQ hope you have a fantastic time. Our main piece of advice is to remember; just because it’s Cheltenham, it does not mean you have to back in every single race. Choose your selections carefully and stick with them.
