We thought that we could beat the odds on the favourite Dunowen Point today. Trainer Anthony Honeyball thought everything was in our favour, as explained in the analysis. Gan On was proven at the trip and conditions were perfect whilst Dunowen point was a doubtful stayer.
We did indeed beat Dunowen Point but, unfortunately for us, Gan On was pulled up early in the race after suffering from a bleed. Everything was going fine early on; jumping was good and the horse was travelling well, but what happened just can’t be predicted. It was a kick in the nuts for both ourselves and connections.
Thankfully the horse is now ok although it was an anxious few hours after the race. I am 100% certain we would have won if not for the bleeding. Watching Dunowen Point tire inside the last furlong whilst the 20/1 outsider of four wins did nothing to brighten our day. I think it’s fair to say the race was called correctly; unfortunately there’s nothing we can do in situations like this.

We backed Loving Spirit 1pt E/W; connections asked us not to send the bet out until Thursday morning so that they could place their money late on Wednesday evening. The horse was well backed from 12/1 into 4/1 in places during the day. We got on at 8/1 or 15/2.
Loving Spirit had undergone a wind operation a few months ago which, judgin on the horse’s home work, had been a success. From the off the horse was held up in the rear but had a clear passage on the outside; despite travelling well I would have liked her a bit nearer to the pace. At two-out I thought we had the race won as the horse was still on-the-bit whilst all other jockeys were pushing along. As the pace quickened inside the two pole we briefly challenged on the outside but kept on at the same pace until the finish.
We spoke with connections after the race who informed us that jockey Robert Havlin reported the horse still holds all her ability but needed an extra two furlongs. She could not quicken when asked but the jockey was adamant that if she was ran over 12 furlongs she would have won without doubt. Providing the horse comes out of the race well she will run again in the coming weeks over 12 furlongs will be placed to win. Although we lost couple of points on her yesterday we will certainly be with her next time where again she should be a decent price and expected to land a gamble for connections.

On Saturday we backed two horses to minimum stakes; Kaldoun Kingdom & Fathsta. I am not quite sure why Fathsta was ridden very handy and even led the high numbered group until the furlong pole. This was a change of tactics and the first time this has been done with the horse. Connections informed us that he would be held up as normal and come late as he stays much better over seven furlongs; this was the ideal profile for the race. Either the horse started too well or a late change was made as they were worried about no pace on his side and getting too far behind.
It was impossible for a horse to make all on the heavy ground and it showed as Fathsta faded at the six pole when he had run out of gas. At the moment we don’t any explanation as to why the tactics were changed.
Next up was Kaldoun Kingdom. We were a bit worried before the off; as we mentioned in the email from Saturday. The ground turned very heavy despite being predicted as soft the day before. Kaldoun Kingdom broke well and held a desirable position at the five furlong marker whilst tracking the leaders. Lee Topliss asked the horse to quicken and for a few strides we drew level with the eventual winner Our Jonathan. All looked very promising. Unfortunately a seven furlong horse was required to win this race and Kaldoun Kingdom ran out of gas on the heavy ground. As it turns out, the winner of the Silver cup was also a seven furlong horse winning a six furlong race.

We placed two bets today; the first bit of business for us in a week or so after taking a short break whilst batteries were recharged and another stable tour was completed.
It was really pleasing that we came back with two heavily backed winners. First up was Farang Kondiew who went off the even money favourite; we backed the horse at 9/4 for 3pts win. This race had been a long term target and it worked out perfectly with Farang Kondiew running out the easy winner despite hanging when a furlong out. The money was down and a good gamble was landed with plenty to spare. Just under 7pts profit on the bet.
Next up was Take It To The Max from the Fahey yard who always have winners at this meeting. We placed 2pts EW at 4/1; the horse was well backed and returned the 11/4 favourite. The soft ground and cheek pieces were expected to bring out plenty of improvement and it certainly showed with not a moments worry. Take It To The Max was always handy and moved into the lead on-the-bit and won going away under Paul Hanagan who just never seems to give a horse a bad ride. Overall it was a nice return on the bet with 10pts.
Thank you for the emails and well done if you did the double that paid 15/1; from the emails we’ve received a few of you have. A good profit on the day with slightly under 17pts returned.

We backed Money Never Sleeps 3pts win at 2/1. Our bet finished 4th in the end at 11/8 after seeing strong support.
From the stalls Money Never Sleeps was very handy; leading the field and handling the Epsom course particularly well, unlike Right Regal who was all at sea. We were travelling on-the-bit until the furlong pole without the jockey moving an inch. We looked the easy winner some way out as the rest of the runners were all being strongly ridden and traded heavily odds-on.
All still looked good at the furlong pole and Money Never Sleeps was on target to win but, with half a furlong left, jockey Robert Havlin was unable to get a response when asking the horse to go away and win the race. The horse went from full tank to running on empty in a matter of strides. It looked fairly clear that Money Never Sleeps did not see out the extra furlong in distance, if the race was six furlong as per last run our bet would have won very easily.
We’re really surprised the horse did not stay and how quickly stamina gave way. The horse will go back over six furlongs next time out on a recovery mission for connections.
An unfortunate 3pts loss on the day that puts us back all square for the month. I think the weekend break has come at the right time as the flat racing is proving really tough at the moment and in all honesty we’re totally fed up of it now.
