Poet’s Voice ran a horrible race and showed a terrible attitude, even biting another horse during the race after bit of a barging match. The horse had been working really at home going clear of some very good horses on the gallops. Our main concern going into this race was whether or not Poet’s Voice would settle, however it turned out not to be a problem as the horse did settle well.

From the gates Frankie held up our selection and all looked good as he was travelling well when turning into the straight. On the home run Dettori angled Poet’s Voice out for a clear run; it looked like the horse would just cruise up and join the leaders, but this never happened. Poet’s Voice did make up a few lengths up and joined a couple of other runners before getting a bump and subsequently biting Beacons Lodge.

Poet’s Voice finished plum last after being heavily eased when all chance had gone. It was a terrible run and nothing has come to light after the race. It maybe that the horse has lost its appetite for racing but does continue to work well at home as many horses do. Whatever the reason, losing 5pts like this is very disappointing. We are now 13.2pts up for the month but have until Wednesday to try and top that up and recoup yesterday’s loss.

The Just Info did well yesterday with the two McCain horses winning whilst Master Bond ran a good race to finish 2nd and Captain Dunne just missed out on a place.

We placed a late bet on Bated Breath as we wanted to watch the 15:05 as connections of Penitent informed us the jockey had been instructed to race up the far side on the fresh ground. We thought that Penitent ran a solid race and was in front when approaching the two pole. It was not until the furlong marker that Penitent was caught, but we think this is as a result of stamina running out following the step-up in trip. On face value the ground looked ok, hence the bet on Bated Breath.

Bated Breath jumped the gates well and led the far side runners until the two pole. Just inside the two furlong marker it all went pear-shaped as the stand-side runners went past with ease whilst the other horses, including Bated Breath, were going backwards on the new ground. Unfortunately the rather large draw bias seemed to have doomed us as soon as we selected a side. A quick recap with connections revealed that the jockey, Steven Drowne, was very happy until two out and was of the opinion that Bated Breath would have gone very close until hitting the change in ground.

Bated Breath was backed heavily before the off as both connections and ourselves thought that the 9/1 with Bet365 was great value. The eventual SP was 9/2. We took a bit of a gamble with Bated Breath but it did not pay-off. The winner, Margot Did, is not a Group 1 horse and has only one a few soft listed races. Margot Did was fortunate in being on the better side of the draw and running with the early pace, nothing was coming from off the pace as we thought. Put a line through this form as we do not feel it representative of the horse’s true capabilites.

The meeting is turning into a bookies dream following today’s results at 33/1, 20/1 and 18/1. This follows on from some big prices yesterday. It’s a great shame that another big UK meeting has been undermined by a draw bias over sprint distances. We think that the ground is responsible as York is usually very fair. I don’t think that we’ll be rushing into bets at York tomorrow as the ring is ankle deep in ripped up tickets at the moment.

We started with Foxtrot Romeo from the Bryan Smart stable.

As with Bop It & Lady Paris in the past few weeks, Bryan again got this spot on and kindly passed the info on. Foxtrot Romeo had been working very well at home and was well fancied by the trainer today. The horse made all and was seeing plenty of day light on the outside. Foxtrot Romeo had the race won a furlong out with no real worries during the race. The price drifted after support for another horse in the race, Swinbank, so those backing with BOG got an even better 5/2.

Next up was our bet on Fire Lily who we thought was totally overpriced. Our main source of information went through the race and made some calls. It was so nearly a perfect day as Fire Lily travelled well on the soft ground, as we knew she would, whilst the majority of the runners were not in the race at any point. It was clear from a fair distance out that it was between us and Best Terms. In the end we were up against a decent horse that beat us fair and square. It was frustrating that the 3rd placed horse was over four lengths behind us and hence we may have been a little unlucky racing against Best Terms from the Hannon yard.

The E/W money was returned at 7/1, so a winning bet. The horse was well backed during the day and went off at 4/1 due to the fact that Pricewise also tipped it.

Wednesday was not a good day with Bapak Chinta being pulled out. We turned it around today and got that money back with a fair profit on top.

We placed a 4pt win bet on Lady Paris at 5/4 after being informed by Bryan Smart that the horse would take plenty of beating. Lady Paris did what the trainer said and won in a great fashion; leading from start to finish. We didn’t have any worries and the jockey put the race to bed in a matter of strides after the furlong pole. Lady Paris won by 4 to 5 lengths whilst still on the bridle at an SP of 10/11.

Betting at these prices regularly is a road to ruin. The month is going nicely so far with around 13pts profit.

First up was Top Cop; trainer Andrew Balding gave us a good word for his runner as he was keen for a win; the owner is the chairman of Salisbury racecourse. The horse ran a decent race and finished 2nd just beaten. Top Cop settled well and looked the winner inside the furlong pole where he just got his head in-front. Unfortunately the lack of experience cost us the race. The horse just wandered slightly once in front and did not really know what to do. We got headed close to home and just missed out.

We no longer speak to the Hannon yard after the Fort Bastion nonsense. If this yard say that the sky is blue & that the grass is green, we recommend that you check for yourself. The Stable had two runners in the race, with Richard Hughes on Daunt. Loads of money came for the other runner, Jacob Cats, who could not win this race. Low and behold Richard Hughes mount was pulled out and he got on Jacob Cats who landed a fantastic gamble from 8/1 in the morning into 15/8.

Our stronger bet of the day was on Terdaad, advised at 4pts win. Connections were very confident of a win and with the ride that Frankie gave the horse, it showed. From the off the jockey held Terdaad up 7 lengths behind the leaders. Turning for home we were beginning to question Frankie Dettori’s tactics but, as expected, he pressed the button and the horse made the ground up with ease hitting the front over a furlong out.

Terdaad went a couple of lengths clear and looked like an easy winner. Unfortunately the horse used up too much energy when making up the ground and was treading water at the finish. Thankfully we held on and the horse got the ride it deserved, such was the confidence of the stable. Terdaad could have easily been ridden a few lengths off the pace and won this race by 4 to 5 lengths. Maybe they were trying to teach the horse, either way it did not like the ride.

Terdaad went off at 2/1 after hitting 5/4 before the race, with the BOG bookies that will do nicely. Two points lost on Top Cop but 8pts won on Terdaad resulted in a six points profit on the day.
