We placed one bet today on Tartan trip who finished 8th. His position does not quite reflect how the horse ran. We backed Tartan Trip at between 16/1 and 18/1 and the SP was 9/1 after being backed heavily. The horse broke well and was settled behind the leaders until past the two furlong pole when the jockey made his move.

Tartan Trip quickened up well and actually hit the front around the furlong pole; we looked good for a big priced winner or place at worst. After trading at 3/1 on Betfair we unfortunately blew up whilst at the front. The lack of a run and strong pace just caught him out.

Jimmy Fortune was then very easy on the horse and probably with a bit more effort a place could have been achieved. It’s a long season so we have no objections that he did not get stuck in. In the end we were beaten 4-5 lengths.

I have no complaints with the bet we put up; it was a big priced selection who went off 9 points shorter that advised. Some extra fitness on our side and the result could have been different.

We still have plenty of action left in the week with ample opportunities to get the two points back.

Time to review the bet we placed today on El Wasmi. The horse finished 3rd at 6/1 resulting in a small profit on the day when considering the BOG offers. El Wasmi was slow out of the stalls and lost a few lengths but made up the ground quickly and was never out of the front three during any stage in the race.

He travelled really nicely towards the furlong pole but ran green; cocking his head to the left and hanging. The jockey never needed to pick up his whip; a nice hands and heels ride contributing to the learning process. The talent of the horse was there to see certain El Wasmi looks a lovely prospect.

This result keeps the 100% record so far with the notebook horses which is pleasing.

Good day for us with our first bet of the week winning. It also represented the perfect start to the notebook; thanks for all the comments and feedback. If for whatever reason you have not got your copy, please get in touch.

Glen’s Diamond won with a fair bit left in the end. Paul Hanagan just got caught out on the turn for home as the leaders kicked on, but he soon got to work on Glen’s Diamond who made up the ground well.

The race was not ran to suit with the slow pace, plus he gave weight away to all rivals. This was a smart performance in the end, with a further step-up in trip this certainly looks a nice horse. We got the 2/1 when advised and the horse returned an SP of 6/4 after being well backed on track.

The below comments are from our notebook:

Glen’s Diamond

There’s a sparkle in the trainer’s eye when talking about this horse; Richard is very enthusiastic. Glen’s Diamond ran three times last year, winning twice. His last run was on good to soft ground, something that Richard says the horse will be far better on. His trainer commented that Glen’s Diamond has done nothing but improve over the winter. The horse will start off in a mile race but may get further as the season progresses. We’ve got a feeling that Glen’s Diamond could be a lot better than many people think.

Cracking day for us with Beshabar landing the Scottish National in great style. Richard Johnson gave the horse a great ride, Beshabar settled early and making it a right old test as planned. Led from start to finish burning everything off, never looked in any danger. Chicago Grey was never sighted once race to many.

Really pleased for Tim Vaughan as he is an excellent trainer who has done brilliantly with his summer jumpers. Now, with some better horses going into the yard, he proves he can train with the best of them. This win will be the first of many from the Vaughan yard during the summer months.

Our other bet, Suhaili, lost the race very early after starting very keenly; pulling his way to the front. This is one reason why we’ve only had two bets this week; the flat racing is so difficult at the start of the new season, it really does take until the end of May before you can bet with any real confidence. It’s the same every year and we just have to be patient. I’ll admit that it was a bit annoying watching World Domination hack up, but I have no complaints thanks to the performance from Beshabar.

We’ve had just two bets all week, but it’s been a good week with around 12 points profit. We’re already nicely in front for the month but this win makes it a really solid one. As normal we aim for 10pts per month profit, 120 points per year, and we are above that at the moment.

We made a profit today with both bets placing. I still can’t believe Mon Parrain did not win. It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen a horse jump like him; today was a fantastic sight. Mon Parrain looked the winner for the entire race, never off the bit; lobbing along; jumped the last 6 lengths clear and even traded at 1.04 on Betfair.

The horse just needs a bit further as he couldn’t quicken up. It was really frustrating not to collect a nice bet, especially as we looked the winner for so long. I’ve received quite a few emails and know several members greened up and collected, but it was a huge shame that the weekend was not paid for with that bet. In the end our risk did return a small profit.

Somersby, well, what can you say? The horse jumped into the lead at 4 out, continued very well, hit the 3rd from last (as he did at Cheltenham) and got going again; running fast at the finish and just missing out on second. It would have been a tough job beating Master Minded but it again shows that the horse is crying out for three miles. Another profit on the bet with the E/W money.
