We had one bet today that finished 3rd despite being very heavily supported in the betting markets. The horse was 6/4 when the text went out, and it returned 10/11. I mentioned that it was likely that the horse would be held up; unfortunately though Clarach seemed to do too much too soon. You could see Richard Johnson looking behind him numerous times, willing another horse to take up the running, but other jockeys are not stupid and they quite rightly left the horse out in the front. At two from home Clarach had used up all his energy and it was game over. The horse managed to stay on for the place, but was 3rd in the end. Our record with the Vaughan runners is excellent so this was unusual. Still, it’s early in the week and we have the big Newmarket meeting starting on Thursday so there’s still plenty of time to get it back.

We placed two ante post bets in the Ayr Gold Cup with the main bet being Victoire De Lyphar who finished 2nd. Victoire De Lyphar ran a sound race despite having to make all the running on the stands side. It was no easy feat and did not suit his running style, but Victoire De Lyphar galloped all the way to the line and rewarded our faith with the E/W money.
Dandy Nicholls was the winning trainer of Redford. Not much can be said about Redford, he always promised to be a decent animal and switched between different trainers. Now that he’s with Dandy he seems to have found the key he won well under Frankie Dettori.
Adrian Nicholls, the jockey on Victoire De Lyphar, had the choice of rides and appeared highly frustrated afterwards when finishing 2nd to another stable runner, but that’s just horse racing! Adrian did say after that he found himself at the front, making all, as nothing could go the pace and knew if anything passed him it would be Frankie. Victoire De Lyphar had a good turn of foot in the last furlong but could not show that today as he was flat out all the way. Regardless, to finish 2nd in a 26 runner race is not bad, but I feel we could have won this one.
Our other selection, Signor Peltro, finished 8th and was beaten by 5 lengths. The horse was just short of room at the furlong pole and may have finished a little closer but I am sure he would not have troubled the winner.
The day was pretty much a blank day with few quid won on Victoire De Lyphar but given back on Signor Peltro, no harm done and a little frustrating.

We had a minor setback yesterday with our account bet on If You Whisper. At no point did we have a run for our money as the horse became stuck behind a wall of other horses. It was only inside the last furlong that the jockey began to look for room and finished full of running and in the process made up quite a few places. We backed the selection at 16/1, the price hit 10/1 during the day.

We backed one horse E/W, Dinkum Diamond, who finished 2nd beaten when beaten by a head. The horse ran a great race and showed good speed in the closing stages. Another couple of strides and I think we may have won. We did lose a bit of momentum as a rival horse caught the back end of Dinkum Diamond who stumbled slightly. I am not sure if it would have made a difference and it’s often easy to get carried away in hindsight. Dinkum Diamind will now be stepped up to 6 furlongs.

The race went perfectly for our selection Eastern Aria. The horse travelled very easily up and had no troubles keeping up with the pace and stayed on all the way to the line. The hot favourite Meeznah was backed very heavily in the betting but simply did not get the trip. No matter what breeding suggests I will always back a horse that is proven over a trip rather make investments as a result of assumptions. There were doubts over the majority of the field and I am pleased that our form expert was able to spot this one.
